Tiban Art
Tiban displays each action dancers whipping their bodies until the blood as a form of ritual sacrifice and to ask the rain to the Almighty. It is believed by the local community blood from the dancer's body will fall upon the earth and able to bring rain.
Tiban arises when the kingdom of Kediri experiencing drought. At that time King Kertajaya asking people to make sacrifices in order to be exempt from disaster. The sacrifice is done in the hot sun by torturing himself with a whip made of Sodo Aren. The blood stream which exits the body of the people as a form of sacrifice is what then were considered to bring rain at this time bumi.Hingga ceremony for rain was still going on because the people believed to be able to avoid drought in Kediri.
