Reba is a ritual ceremony which is held every new year, precisely in January or February. Ritual is intended to do homage and words of gratitude to the service of the ancestors. And the ceremony was also to evaluate everything about the life of society on the previous year by the people who have traveled Ngada.
Through this ceremony, family and community also asked for directions to the religious and traditional leaders to lead a better life in the new year to come. The ceremony is always held every year. The day before the celebration of Reba starts, held the opening ceremony of Reba or su'i Uwi. On the night of the event su'i Uwi done eating and drinking together (ka maki Reba) while waiting for the morning. In the morning, when the ceremony took place, guests are provided food and beverages that are ripe and ready to eat (Ngeta you bhagi ngia, mami Utu mogo. Kaa the papa vara, this su papa pinu).
During the ceremony lasted Reba dance accompanied by dancers holding the long sword (sau) and staff of color at the edges adorned with white goat hair. A dance is a single-stringed musical instrument string made from coconut shell or gourd are also from the forest. As a container resonance of this instrument is covered with goat skin, which in the middle has been hollowed. While the bow is made of a bamboo splinter which had been tied with yarn that has been rubbed with wax.
Reba ceremonial privileges was conducted for 3 to 4 days. Before the ceremony dances and songs (O Uwi) inculturation in the church held a Mass led by a priest or a priest. Several series of ceremony is also accompanied with a choir singing church, and use the local language Ngada.
Outside the church, the atmosphere grew festive ceremonies, when the audience and dancers presented with one or two glasses of wine (old fig). It is a tradition Ngada everyone who attended the ceremony. However, Reba is not just rah-rah party, but a form of joy (Gaja gora) Ngada community while maintaining the feel spiritual. Reba ceremony can we see in each district that is located in Ngada District, Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara Province.
