Mahakam River


The Mahakam River is a river located in Samarinda lies along the river 48 km (30 mi) from the river mouth.

Mahakam River is the largest river in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, with the catchment area of about 77,000 km2, which lies between 2˚N to 1˚S latitude and 113˚E to 118˚E longitude. The Mahakam meeting the River Kedang Pahu at the city of Muara Pahu. From there the river meanders eastward through the Mahakam lakes region, which represents an extremely flat tropical lowland area surrounded by peat land.

Ecologically Mahakam River is important as it hosts rare water birds and Irrawaddy Dolphin, which is called Pesut by local people.
