Maras Taun ceremony from Mendanau Island,Indonesia

Maras Taun was originally a commemoration day for the farmers harvest paddy in the village of Nasik Strait, Mendanau Island. Rice fields can only be harvested after nine months of planting time, hence this harvest celebration held only once a year. On development, the party of the people is changing, not just to commemorate the harvest of rice, but also as an expression of gratitude of all island residents, both farmers and fishermen. If the farmers celebrate the rice harvest, so the fishermen celebrate the mackerel fishing season and a calm sea conditions.

Maras itself means to cut, and the epidemic that year. The meaning of this name are all residents to leave years ago, with thanksgiving, and pleaded for all the good in the next year. Maras Taun this event, was not only done by people Nasik Strait, but also by several villages on the island of Belitung, Mendanau Island, and other small islands are included in Belitung province. Nevertheless, the celebration of Maras Taun in Nasik Strait is the first celebration of which made tourism agenda and has been supported by the government of the Province of Bangka Belitung.

Maras Taun celebration can last for three days, with the last day as the culmination of the celebration. Before the feast, the people who attended were treated to a variety of performing arts from the village of Nasik Strait as well as from other regions. Various arts like opera Dawn Belitung typical, typical Minang plate dance, and theater from South Sumatra Dulmuluk reassembly. In addition to traditional arts, performing solo organ music also add to the festive party of the people of this.

At the height of the celebration, the event opened with a song and dance, presented by Maras Taun twelve adolescent girls, who use the kebaya typical peasant woman, complete with hat capingnya. The song is sung by teenagers is a reflexion thanksgiving for the land that they can get. Meanwhile, the movement in this dance symbolizes the peasants who worked the rice fields during harvest.

After the dance was staged, the event continued with Kesalan. Haturan Kesalan itself is a prayer of thanksgiving for the harvest that has been passed and the request for blessings for the future, led by two elders of the indigenous people Nasik Strait. After prayers, both traditional elders are sprinkled water was mixed with leaves and Ati-ati Nereuse. Sprinkling of water is a symbol of bad luck for residents to dispose of the village.

Maras Taun festivity will be more lively when lepat (food from rice fields in red, filled with pieces of fish or meat), contested by the public. In the ceremony Taun Maras, will be presented two types lepat, namely a large lepat weighing about 25 kilograms, and numbered 5000 lepat small fruit. Large Lepat will be cut by local leaders or the guest of honor, which was then distributed to local residents. Cutting and division lepat is a symbol of a leader who must serve their citizens. Afterwards, local people will scramble to take-lepat lepat small. Lepat scramble is a symbol of joy citizens of the harvest and a good fish catch.
