Berhidang Tradition from Palembang,South Sumatera,Indonesia

If you come to Palembang Darussallam, there is a tradition of eating together, which is inherited from the ancestors of the ethnic Arab community Palembang. This tradition is called a dish or Berhidang. For some communities in Indonesia, this tradition is not so strange but in Palembang, this tradition still holds a very strong. Berhidang tradition is one of the inherited tradition with goals as unifying society. Unifying symbol is immediately apparent when Berhidang procedure is presented. Berhidang presentation is similar to the way people eat the middle east but in Palembang, Berhidang traditions are often found on occasions when there was a religious ritual and ceremony.

Berhidang dish is one of the characteristics that you can find in town this Pempek. Usually after the event then continued with the eating with the guests. Guests will soon get together in a group that usually amount to between 4-8 people, a circle and facing each other where they were placed in the middle mat / tablecloth. Not long after that, will soon be approached steering committee that will carry water in a kettle with a water reservoir. They will soon be serving the guests to wash their hands and provide hand wipes. After the officers are delivering water hand washing, not so long ago the other officers to bring drinking water directly distributed to each group of dishes. After the officer who brought water to drink, the other officers who brought rice, side dishes and desserts are usually of fruits such as bananas, watermelons and oranges.

After everything is laid, side dishes such as: chicken opor, soy sauce chicken, malbi, vegetables, beans, pineapple and pickled chili poured over the rice oil once sprinkled with fried onions are put in a round wooden plate-shaped tray and mixed thoroughly. To start the meal together is usually preceded by one guest who is considered the center of the oldest group, followed by other guests. Nor do you eat using plates that were distributed, Although there is also the use of plates, but typically the guests ate in the same large dish-shaped circular tray earlier. Dishes were divided equally in a democratic manner and is placed exactly in place of each guest to take the rice dish.

For those not familiar with how to eat like this, perhaps a bit felt a little uncomfortable because it has not been eating with 4-8 people with the same plate and with the same number of side dishes. And the incredible again, we'll be able to see how other people eat and style.

After dinner, guests can wash their hands in bowl containing water that is shared with other guests and then to dry it with a tablecloth mengelapkannya the dish was taken as the base. Incredibly unique and interesting.
